Subvocalization is the little voice in your head that “says” each word as you read. It’s how most people were taught to read, and it links reading speed to speaking speed — roughly 200–300 words per minute.
You can’t eliminate subvocalization entirely (and shouldn’t try — it aids comprehension of hard material). But you can loosen it enough to read faster:
- Read slightly faster than your inner voice can keep up.
- Use a visual pacer to pull your eyes forward.
- Practise with RSVP drills that present words faster than you can “say” them.
Reducing over-reliance on subvocalization is one of the core habits Acceleread trains.
