WPM (words per minute) is the standard way to measure reading speed. To calculate it, divide the number of words read by the time taken in minutes.
Typical benchmarks:
- Average adult: 200–300 WPM
- College student: ~300 WPM
- Trained reader: 400–600 WPM with good comprehension
WPM only matters alongside comprehension — reading quickly but understanding nothing isn’t useful. Take the free reading-speed test to measure your WPM and comprehension together.
