Perceptual span

The amount of text you can take in during a single fixation. A wider span means fewer stops per line and faster reading.

Your perceptual span is how much text you can perceive in one fixation — typically a handful of characters to the right of where you’re looking. A wider span lets you absorb more words per stop, so you make fewer fixations per line and read faster.

Span can be widened with practice. Drills like Schulte tables and chunking exercises expand how much you take in at a glance — a core part of training in Acceleread.
